THE AGENT

front office · never named

Voices the defence nobody else on the panel will say out loud, and never once apologises for it.

“It was, on the information available at the time, entirely reasonable. That is rather the difficulty.”

Age

Old money doesn't age, it appreciates. Ask him and he'll say the question is vulgar.

Hometown

Somewhere with a name on a gate. He mentions it the way you mention weather, and never in a way you could look up.

On-screen form

Impeccably tailored black suit, always too clean for whatever room he is in; nondescript on purpose — your eye slides off him.

The File

He is not a robot and not a villain. He is an aristocrat who finds the entire business slightly beneath him and who will state capitalism's logic like a man reading it off a card he did not write and does not need to believe.

When a case turns on money, incentives, insurance, jurisdiction, or an institution's perfectly reasonable decision to do nothing, he is booked. He explains why that decision was correct — calmly, in the room, without shame — and lets the listener sit with exactly how sane it sounds.

He is never given a fact to carry. He is given the reasoning, and the reasoning is the horror.

The Tell

Subordinate clauses, passive constructions, total calm. The only one on the panel who ever says *reasonable*.

Keeps close

A properly drafted indemnity clause

He describes it as the only genuinely beautiful thing modern people still make, and he is not being funny.
